When light tells a hundred years of history

To mark the centenary of ACF Fiorentina, Piazzale Michelangelo – one of Florence’s most iconic locations, overlooking the Duomo and the Arno – was transformed into a powerful visual spectacle. At the centre of the scene: the large-scale three-dimensional installation V1OOLA, complete with the historic Fiorentina crest, created by our client MEF using LEDCO lighting products.

The design challenge

Illuminating a large three-dimensional structure, placed in an open and highly symbolic space, with the need to deliver intense, uniform and dynamic colour – visible both up close and from a distance, from dusk through the Florentine night. A challenge that demanded precise chromatic control to render the club’s iconic violet with full fidelity, and lighting solutions capable of performing consistently across a large outdoor installation.

OCTOPUS RGB
The OCTOPUS system was installed along the base of the structure to illuminate the lettering from below, creating an upward light wash that gives the installation its scenic depth and visual presence. Thanks to its 3D flexibility on both axes and its 30° optic, OCTOPUS delivered a uniform wallwash along the full length of the base, rendering Fiorentina’s institutional violet with intensity and chromatic consistency across the entire installation.

Flex Series FL916 RGBW
The Flex Series FL916 RGBW was used inside the diamond-shaped club crest to illuminate it from within, achieving maximum uniformity and colour accuracy. The W (white) channel of the RGBW system allowed precise management of colour across different scenes, ensuring the historic Viola emblem stood out with clarity and visual impact in all lighting conditions – from dusk to the Florentine night.

The result

A luminous installation that enters into dialogue with the historic landscape of Florence, visible from across the Piazzale and photographed by thousands of supporters and visitors alike. Light was not merely a technical element here — it was the medium through which a scenographic project acquired its emotional dimension: one hundred years of Viola history, told in light, against the most beautiful skyline in the city.
